Nedap & Lednovate: innovative co-creation under challenging circumstances

With the renovation of an iconic railway station in the Netherlands, one of the challenges is to arrange the right kind of illumination of the construction site round-the-clock without compromising the safety of passing trains. Nedap and Lednovate joined forces to address the challenge. The result: excellent, safe, energy-efficient and wirelessly dimmable lighting.

The railway station of Groningen – a city in the northern part of the Netherlands – is undergoing a substantial renovation that will take around four years to complete. A separate road with a roundabout is constructed for this renovation, allowing freight traffi c to drive back and forth safely, without having to reverse.

Functionality & safety
One of the characteristics of this project is that a substantial part of the work takes place close to the railroad tracks, with trains passing by several times a day. Sixteen light columns are needed along the new road to cover the substantial construction area and allow for the right amount of light 24/7. Lights that in no case cause glare to drivers of trains that pass by the site. This requires a flexible lighting control solution where certain groups of lights can be easily switched on and off or be dimmed depending on construction activity and traffic.

Tight deadline
Peter Bunt is account manager at Lednovate, a manufacturer of high-quality LED lighting for the industrial market. One of the characteristics of this Dutch company is the fact that both the development as well as the production of luminaires are being done in-house. A combination that provides customers with the highest quality and excellent service. “There was an extremely tight deadline in this case”, Bunt says. “The lighting had to be in place in eight weeks and it had to function impeccably. These are cost-driven operations and the absence of adequate lighting simply means a great loss of time. Evidently, we were not going to let that happen.”

Nedap Luxon
Based on the map of the construction site, Bunt and his team proposed a lighting arrangement that can be dimmed and switched off wirelessly, using Luxon, Nedap’s acclaimed connected lighting platform. Andries Jan Oosterhof, Director of Sales at Nedap Luxon: “One of the main characteristics of our system is its’ implementation. Luxon is an open platform thatcan be used with all kinds  of fixtures, independent of brand. The fact that it’s a wireless system makes all the difference. With a construction site of about 400 meters long you do not want any unnecessary cables.
Furthermore, it had to be possible to easily remove the light columns to another location in the near future. A wireless connection evidently makes this a lot easier.”

Energy savings
The fixtures used at the construction site are part of the Vela Serie, which is completely manufactured by Lednovate. “We only use components of the highest
quality to build our fixtures”, says Bunt. “It really makes a difference, particularly in terms of maintenance and sustainability.” When selecting the specific LED-lights for the fixtures, Bunt and his team opted for a 150-watt model, also from Vela. “It is an excellent replacement for the 400-watt lights that are often used on construction sites”, says Bunt. “It actually resulted in a spectacular energy reduction of 20,000 watts per hour.”

Co-creation
Oosterhof: “We have very high standards where it comes to selecting our partners and the same goes for Lednovate. Our collaboration on this particular project is an excellent example of ccreation
under challenging circumstances. In an incredibly short period of time, Bunt’s team has equipped the construction site with sixty-four state-of-the art wirelessly connected fi xtures that can be dimmed and turned on and off at any given moment. This means a significant reduction of light pollution in the area for the next three to four years. Moreover, the combination of connected lighting with the high-end hardware produced and implemented by Lednovate results in significant energy savings and therefore cost reduction. All in all, an excellent result for the end-user.”
